Alex Whitney Ms. Stronks E.L.A. 8 11-30-15 The Pie Summary
The Pie, an exert from “A summer Life” by Gary Soto, is about a six year old boy who steels a pie from a shop, and feels guilty soon after. This exert starts out with a very bold hook. The sentence is “I knew enough about hell to stop me from stealing” (Paragraph 1). This grabber is very strong, because it gets your attention very well. The boy in the exert claims to be holy in every one of his bones. He was standing in a shop next to some pies, and the temptation was too much. He stole an apple pie and walked off. He walked to a neighbors yard and took out the pie. Right when he was going to eat some, the neighbor appeared. He took off for his house and started eating the pie in his driveway. Someone drove by and “knew” he stole it. This exert uses various literary terms such as metaphors, similes, and personification. One example of personification is in paragraph two when the boy says that “But boredom made me sin.” This quote gives boredom the ability to make someone sin.
