Stranded
Low battery. Exactly the two words I didn't want to see right now. We were following our phones GPS out of the dessert when the message popped up. First, let me backtrack a bit. I was on the cargo plane with the other marines heading to the F.O.B., or Forward Operating Base, in Baghdad. We were were all listening to music except Elmer, he was asleep on my shoulder. I never really liked him, but he saved my life and I appreciate that. We were just moving along, when all of the sudden our C-130 Hercules was struck by a S.A.M. A hole in the fuselage formed right behind me and Elmer. We were so lucky we got caught by the cargo net! I quickly grabbed my parachute and jumped out with Elmer. We pulled our chutes the moment our plane exploded above us. We were stranded with no food, water, or directions. I then remembered that I had my phone with me, so I pulled it out and turned on the GPS. Elmer and I walked towards the nearest town. We were both sore from being cramped in a plane. We were about a quarter way there when the "Low Battery" icon showed up. I was screaming on the inside "Dang it Alex, why didn't you charge it!!!". We were about to give up, when I saw a shack in the distance, we both sprinted to it. We ran in the door... empty. We searched around until I noted that there was a crease in the rug. I pulled it up and under it was a trap door to a supply cache. It was obviously Taliban, so we hid inside until they arrived. We waited a full day until we heard a vehicle pull up. We got ready with our knives, one one either side of the entrance. When we heard footsteps, we were surprised to hear english. It was a Medvac team looking for us and other survivors. We got in their Humvee, and drove off to F.O.B.
