The First Day summary
The First Day by takes place in America during a time when there was a lot of racism and segregation. It tells a story of a young black kindergartener and her mother who wants her daughter to go to a school for white kids but is rejected. A theme for this story could be "Don't judge people you don't know". They fight against racism and judgement. First, the mother wants to take her daughter to a school named Seaton. Then, a lady at the front door of Seaton, who acts as if she knew them both, stops and prevents them from entering the school. It is not said, but we can infer that they were stopped due to racism and segregation. After that, the kindergartener and the mother go to Walker Jones school. Finally, they sign up for school, but the mother doesn’t know how to read or write. Eventually, someone helped the mother finish the form so the daughter could enroll. As the story ends, the daughter goes to a school for colored people.
